Reciprocal subsidies between temporary ponds and riparian forests

چکیده
Aquatic habitats are closely linked to surrounding terrestrial systems via reciprocal subsidies. Much of the research on aquatic–terrestrial subsidies has focused streams and lakes, while across boundaries other systems, like temporary ponds, have received less attention. To address lack information regarding cross-habitat we quantified leaf litter inputs, amphibian egg insect metamorph aquatic emergence for eight ponds. We compared relative magnitude biotic ponds identify potentially important yet overlooked Terrestrial inputs were second largest subsidy (mean 15.3 g m−2 yr−1), exceeding combined amphibians insects 4.0 these high-quality generally unaccounted in similar studies. Across wetland complex, total (8929.3 yr−1) was nearly four times higher than (2491.9 yr−1). that lakes higher. Although larger produced greater fluxes habitats, smaller often more productive per unit area. Therefore, a mosaic small may produce or equivalent food webs single large pond. Given continued threats their connections forests, management restoration as well future studies, should take holistic approaches account many linkages, factors influence them.

Reciprocal subsidies: dynamic interdependence between terrestrial and aquatic food webs.
Mutual trophic interactions between contiguous habitats have remained poorly understood despite their potential significance for community maintenance in ecological landscapes. In a deciduous forest and stream ecotone, aquatic insect emergence peaked around spring, when terrestrial invertebrate biomass was low. In contrast, terrestrial invertebrate input to the stream occurred primarily during ...
متن کاملConvergent diversity and trait composition in temporary streams and ponds
Hydrology is the main environmental filter in aquatic ecosystems and may result in shared tolerances and functional traits among species in disparate ecosystems. We analyzed the associations between taxonomic and functional facets of diversity within aquatic ecosystems (ponds vs. streams) across a hydroperiod gradient (1–365 d) to untangle the hydrologic drivers of aquatic invertebrate diversit...
متن کاملNitrate Dynamics in Riparian Forests: Groundwater Studies
This study was conducted to assess the removal of groundwater nitrate (NOa-) in different soil drainage classes within three riparian forests located in Rhode Island. A solution of NOa-and a conservative tracer [either bromide (Br-) or chloride (CI-)] was applied in growing and the dormant seasons to trenches upgradient of wetland locations with hydric soils (poorly and very poorly drained soil...
متن کاملDenitrification in riparian forests receiving agricultural discharges
Riparian forests can remove large amounts of nitrate from the groundwater discharges of adjacent uphill croplands. We review the mechanisms that could account for NO3 removal. Denitrification is hypothesized to be important, but measurement problems limit the relevant field data. We used large chambers (1-20 mZ) and tunable-diode laser infrared spectrophotometry to measure nitrous oxide (NzO) e...
